Needlepoint Glossary

needlepoint tools including scissors, needle, unpicker and bag

Understanding the basic terminology is a great first step to take in getting started! Here are some key terms you’ll need to know:

Canvas

Needlepoint is stitched on an even-weave canvas that has a design on it! All Rachel Barri Designs canvases are hand painted - but needlepoint canvases can also be printed.

Mesh Count

The number of holes per inch in the canvas. The most common counts you’ll see are 13 mesh and 18 mesh.  The higher the mesh count, the smaller the holes!

Threads

Threads are made up of fiber (the raw material from which all threads are made, ex. Silk, cotton, wool). Different fibers provide varied effects, stitching ease and durability.

Tent Stitch

There are three basic stitches that we recommend learning first. These stitches are grouped in a family called ‘tent stitches’. They look the same from the front, but different from the back and serve different purposes when stitching! (diagram)

Stretcher Bars

Wooden frames that keep your canvas taut while you stitch.

Needle Minder

A magnet that sits atop your canvas that you fasten your needle to ensure it stays in place.

Plying

Separating your thread into several strands.

Let's get stitching!
