A Guide To Threads & Mesh

Choosing the right fiber and canvas is crucial for your project. Consider the project's intended use, the desired texture, and your personal preference when selecting your fibers.

Here's a quick rundown of thread types:

Wool

Durable and great for larger projects and wearable items.

Silk

Shiny and smooth, perfect for finer details.

Cotton

Versatile and affordable. As a beginner, Perle Cotton (twisted strand) is much easier to work with than strandable cotton. This can change once you’ve become more comfortable with needlepoint.

Blended Fibers

These can also be a good choice, such as 50% wool + 50% silk, since they do not need to be plied and are easy to stitch with.

What about mesh count?

Mesh count is the number of holes per inch in the canvas. The most common counts you’ll see are 13 mesh and 18 mesh.  The higher the mesh count, the smaller the holes and generally the more intricate a design!

Let's get stitching!
